Steep Point Investments is the investment arm of the Steep Point group, founded by Lachlan Clough. Our capital sits predominantly in the group's proprietary quantitative portfolio, and beyond that in managed quantitative portfolios, venture, real assets, listed securities and credit. We take a long view and work only with people we trust.

Origin

The land ends at Steep Point. West of it there is water, and the water goes all the way to Africa.

The cliffs stand at the end of the continent. They fall straight into the Indian Ocean and the ocean comes at them and does not stop, swell after swell out of the Roaring Forties. There is no harbour here and nothing to break the wind. You stand at the edge and there is nothing between you and the sea.

The place is hard to reach and it gives you nothing when you come. No shade. No fresh water worth the name. The sun works on you and the salt works on you and the wind does not rest. The old ships came here to the edge of the known world and some of them stayed. The Zuytdorp went down at the foot of these cliffs in the year 1712 and the sea kept what it took and told no one, and the cliffs carry the name still.

But it is alive. It moves and feeds and goes on, and you do not see it unless you look. The bay is named for the sharks and the sharks are there yet, in the shallows and in the deep, doing what they did before the ships, when the names for this place were Malgana names. Whoever comes to the edge comes to read it.

You do not argue with a place like this. You watch it and you learn its habits and you take what it gives.
